Ursofelik - El Abrazo del Oso

We has a chance to chat with the artist know as Ursofelik. He is the artist behind the new El Abrazo del Oso line.  The artist works and lives on Monterrey, Mexico.

 

 

 

 

The Complete Bear - So how did the idea of El Abrazo del Oso develop?

 

Ursofelik - First of all, we attempted to create community and group around here. Initially, the idea started as a bear group, and then I used to do the banners and posters for the events.

 

The Complete Bear - Does that group still exist?

 

Ursofelik - Unfortunately, no.

 

The Complete Bear - Is it difficult to develop a bear community in Mexico?

 

Ursofelik - Yes, it’s difficult because here we the people have many different ideas and expectations of what a group should be, and because is hard to find the physical bear stereotype.

 

The Complete Bear – So, how did you move into your own clothing line?

 

Ursofelik – The idea of creating a community is still present and the desire to continue drawing some concepts related to the bear scene.   And T-shirts are a good way to self-expression.

 

 

The Complete Bear - Where do your images come from? Models? Fantasy?

 

Ursofelik - Most are from my imagination.  I usually take some references to develop the concepts, looking always for a good story to tell.

 

The Complete Bear - A lot of the gamers identified with your images, especially the guy riding the bear.

 

Ursofelik – Yes, well with the riding bear I tried to make and image about success and self-recognition. An image of triumph.

 

The Complete Bear - There is a mixture of leather pride worked in, as well. Tell us about the leather element of your images?

 

Ursofelik - I think that although leather image is not representative of the bear scene, is always present in somehow.

 

The Complete Bear - Do you intend to develop a leather bear for the line?

 

Ursofelik – Yes, it’s a topic that I would like to develop more in the future. The bear and leather pride have some bridges in common.

 

The Complete Bear - What other ways do you express your art?

 

Ursofelik - Well, basically drawing and painting combined with traditional and digital media.  Almost all the illustrations in the line were made combining both.

 

The Complete Bear - Do you produce works in other mediums than the t-shirts?

 

Ursofelik - Yes, I take commissions to make paintings. 

 

The Complete Bear - What new things can we expect form you?

 

Ursofelik - I am interested in continue developing the style, maybe produce more merchandise items, but primarily try to represent the expectations of the bear scene.   I am really enjoying the process and every time I hear the positive feedback, it encourages me to continue.
