 Team Bear

From June 3-9, 2007, Team Bear is bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle . It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

Help us support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the HIV/AIDS services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center by giving what you can. We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past. . .

Want to support the Team? Have a beer!

Join the boys at The Lone Star Beer Bust on Saturday, May 26th between 3-7. Proceeds from the raffle, massage, auction, food and donor bucket go towards a donation to the AIDS Lifecycle on behalf of a Team BEAR rider in need.

Can't make the event? Then buy a T-shirt!!

The Complete Bear is offering Team Bear T-shirts designed by Frisch to support the team. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these shirts are to support Team Bear in this year's LifeCycle.

Equipping the Larger Paddler by Wes Boyd

alaska Until fairly recently, the opportunities for larger kayakers -- weighing, say, 250 pounds and up -- have been limited due to the lack of boats and gear adequately sized for them.

While the "extra-large" kayakers still don't have the selection that's available to their smaller brethren, manufacturers and dealers have started to take notice that it's a growing market. Even so, adequately equipping and training the larger kayaker can have its challenges.

I'm one of those large sized guys. When I first got back into kayaking, after years away from it, I was nearly a hundred pounds larger than I'd been before. There wasn't much gear available for the big guy -- it seemed like all the neat boats and great gear were designed for people half my 300-pound weight, and I was left out in the cold.

Over a period of time, with lots of searching around and trying things out, I discovered that while the situation was bleak, it wasn't impossible. It's been a slow learning process, but I've found out, at least partly from other people that have the same problems, that kayaking is something perfectly reasonable for the bigger person.

Wes Boyd is a country newspaper editor from southern Michigan who's been paddling off and on for 40 years, mostly on inland lakes and the Great Lakes. His non-commercial hobby web site, kayakplace.com, has a lot of resources for the larger kayaker and much besides.

 Back from Berlin

Beer Mug At The Complete Bear, we believe in living life fully - which includes occasionally stopping to smell the roses. Or in this case, German Bären in leather, oh my!

We drank beer!! We took in a bundeliger match between HERTHA BERLIN and BORUSSIA DORTMUND. We cruised Schoneberg. And of course, we had to go see Knut!

Did I mention we drank beer? LOL

 BLOGGING FOR GLBT FAMILIES DAY

You are cordially invited to participate in the second annual Blogging for LGBT Families Day on June 1. I'm especially pleased to announce that the Family Pride Coalition will be sponsoring this year's event and working in conjunction with us to get the word out and raise visibility for our families.

Last year, over 130 bloggers participated, including lesbian moms, gay dads, adult children of LGBT parents, members of the transgender community, LGBT individuals without children, and straight allies. Countries represented included the United States as well as Australia, Canada, and the UK. Some bloggers told stories about their paths to parenthood, or tales about their children; some wrote about LGBT relatives or friends; others discussed current political events; and several spoke of why their faith obliges them to support LGBT rights. This year's writings should be equally diverse and compelling.
