We had a chance to chat with the 2010 Bay Area Cub – P.A. Cooley. Many Bay Area Cubs have gone on to win other titles and have offered countless hours of service to many Bay Area non-profits and community service organizations.
What made you decide to run for the title?
When I got into the whole bear thing I joined a website to meet other bears. I had to come up with a screen name and I picked Loverboycub. Infrequently, a cranky 20 something would say something pejorative about me not being a cub. They would “inform me” that there was no such thing as a cub over 40. All the men I dated called me a cub, so that’s why I gravitated to that identity. I also didn’t think I was big enough to be a bear. As time went on more and more unsolicited opinions were offered so I felt I had to prove my point that age was indeed just a number, and not a factor of whether I was a cub or not.
What does husbear think?
He is definitely excited about it! He keeps squeezing me and calling me his little Bay Area Cub 2010. It’s pretty funny in a tender moment –especially when he says the 2010 part. We are going to Lazy Bear and he went to the volunteer meeting/pool party in Sacramento last weekend. He was a little bummed out that a lot of guys there never even heard of the title. I just told him, “Don’t worry babe, that’s gonna change.” I don’t expect he will be much of a sash widow. I’ll need his help too much.
What does being a cub mean to you?
Glad that you asked what it means to me specifically. I think there is a mischievous teddy bear element to being a cub –almost kinda wicked. I always think of the school bully who always sat in the corner for acting out. I think there is a look too –smaller compact –not as furry but furry none –the-less. I don’t think a cub always does what Daddy Bear says either…that’s probably blasphemy in the culture, but there are definite times where I like to call the shots. I find most men really like that quality about me. Bait and Switch was my FAVORITE thing to do when I was younger. There are also plenty of times where I really want to my Daddy Bear to be in charge. Sex should be fluid and slightly unpredictable.
Will you be competing for other titles?
Well –I want to impress the guys at BOSF with my work as BAC first and foremost. I think –depending on what the competition is I might compete again. With the title comes huge responsibility right? It may not be until I have a little silver on top though. I’d love my husbear to compete in a Bear Competition. He’s pretty damned sexy.
What is the message for your year?
My purpose is a clearer than the actual message. My background is in theater and I want to give some of the local struggling non profit theaters some focus. There are some small theaters that disappeared due to our national economic woes. I’d also like to expose some of the younger generation to all of the amazing semi-professional houses we have here in the Bay Area. Gay Theater is abundant around here and we should keep it alive. I have had a very good time working as an actor in these houses the past 20 years. My rather ambitious goal is to produce a “Cub-aret” that could be used as a fundraising tool throughout the year for many needy organizations-and not just theaters. I will need some enthusiastic, hardworking volunteer bears and cubs for this project. Not only do I need to find artists who will work for free (singers dancers, comedic actors, writers ) I need to find a PR guy who will give this the hype it needs to generate the kind of funds I want to raise. I kind of need a tech guy with the skills of MacGyver. The show I want to put on will be very portable and will be able to be performed in almost any space. I want the material to have a naughty streak reminiscent of Tom Orr’s Dirty Little Showtunes. Of course I will need a good stage manager because sound and light are critical and musicians and well…lets just say I need a lot of support to pull this off. If I can’t find some fun dudes to work and play with me –well then I guess it’s a solo project isn’t it? At any rate, I expect the viewers will have a good time.
Other than that –my message is about love. Hokey maybe but I think if the Gay Community subsets all bonded together for one magnificent fundraiser, it would be a SPECTACULAR evening. Leather, Bear, and the Court system –throw in a twink or two and we would be able to raise some beaucoup bucks.
Where did you grow up?
In a small Military College town called Northfield Vermont. Used to be terrified to admit that but I am proud of my state and my family and I have been having fun connecting with childhood friends from my hometown on Facebook. It amazes me how open they all are with me,
If you were alone in the woods, which daddy bear would you want to rescue and why?
I Rescue? or get Rescued by ? My Husbear is quite handy in the woods and has good survival instincts. He once climbed a jagged cliff after falling from it and fracturing his pelvis and DROVE himself to the Hospital. I imagine if I was in trouble I’d be in good hands with him. If I were to RESCUE some Daddy Bear in the woods …I’d want him to be indebted to me and show me his appreciation…Fantasy Daddy Bears include Michael Clark Duncan and Tom Coliquio and The Incredible Hulk. -even though he’s not furry he’s a cool shade of green.
What was your nickname in high school?
I have a class football Jersey that says “Cools” on the back. The most popular kid in my class called me that so…but he was the only one that called me by that.
How kinky are you?
On a scale of 1 to 10- with 10 being like S&M blood drawing and taking a shit on someone- I’d say I am a 4. My Kink involves words, and anything that feels very, very good by most people’s standards. I like dressing up. Playing a rookie cop, or an inmate or a troubled private first class needing guidance from his Sergeant. Not a fan of the pain or anything that leaves a telltale mark.
Does P.A. have one?
Although my answer to Question 9 should give you a good idea of whether I have one or not – I’ll just have you come over and take a look sometime…..
