A Bear's Story
A Bear's Story
dir. Vincent Mtzlpick, US, 2003, video, 21 mins
Somewhere beyond loneliness lies friendship and romance... Will Robert find it?
A Bear's Story is a short subject film about the bear community. It was the first piece to address the growing bear movement. The film was shot over a weekend and included 80 or so of friends of the filmmaker - Kevin Bowe - and members of Bears LA as extras and volunteers. Kevin also has the starring role of Robert, who stumbles across into the bear community when he thinks he is attending a fund raiser to save polar bears. “The Bears are having a fundraiser, do you want to come?”
The film was premiered at IBR in 2003, to a very woofy reception. Of course! OMG – the pool alone got my vote. “Honey, we are so moving to LA!!” The film won best short that summer at The DC International LGBT Film Festival. It has since been showed at a variety of LGBT film festivals including The Hamburg International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (Germany), and The Oslo Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in Norway.
When I asked Kevin about the hardest part of doing the film, he said “Jumping into the pool. I was a little concerned, but everyone just cheered me on!!” Kevin continues to get request for the film from various LGBT film festivals. He has also made in available for download at OutoftheCloset.tv. Click here to watch the entire short film now.
A Bear’s Story is a feel good movie about finding acceptance and community. And check out Dean Ricca - the love interest – WOOF!!
Kevin has donated the use of his film to OutoftheCloset.tv. He asks that if you enjoy the film to make a donation to the "American Diabete's Association" by clicking here. © 2005 Outofthecloset.tv, All Rights Reserved

2007-03-14 - AL - Las Vegas, NV I had the fortune of seeing this film at a screening at one of the neon mini- fests in Las Vegas. I was never so moved by a film that depicted bears as the kind of people who love and are loved. We have relationships and we struggle with body images when the rest of the world thinks that all gay men should be smooth and muscular. As for me, I like a guy with fur and a little meat on his bones. The director was a very well spoken and well rounded individual and hope to see more work from him in the future - just my humble opinion
FROM THE SCREENING AT THE LONDON GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL:
2004-04-02 - Posted by dave A very winning film - warm and human - and great to see 'bears' shown as desirable. Nice performace from lead guy.
2004-02-26 - Posted by vince I was very fortunate to have been at the first public screening of this wonderful film in San Francisco in February 2003. I found it hugely touching and also very funny. The film uses the bear community as it's setting, but the basic story - about a single man finding love and companionship - will appeal to everyone. The writing is superb and the two lead actors are perfect in their roles. Highly recommended.
2004-02-26 - Posted by stephen When a gay man is invited to what he mistakenly thinks is a pool party benefit to "Save the Polar Bears" he discovers that not all gay men go for sleek, svelte younger men and his social and sex life improves immensly. As a pizza loving, star-trek watching, over 30 gay man with a man's appetite an ice cream fetish and a belt size larger han some gym bunnies IQ's I LOVED this movie. Even within an oppressed minority there are oppressed sub-minorities. It's nice to see some of them having a good time.
