A Tree Grows in Chicago

Life is always crazy.  An unending list of chores - work projects, volunteering, stuff around the house, meeting Husbear’s needs – what’s a bear to do?

My escape has always been go hug a tree.  But sometimes getting away isn’t so easy.  Load up the truck, corral the dogs, find Husbear – you get the point.  So, I brought nature to me.  I started gardening.  It started off easy enough - a houseplant here, a few herbs over the sink – and soon I’m rototilling the back forty.  Well, we live in SF, so it’s more like the back 15x12 – but I digress.

Recently, we were in Chicago visiting our friends John and Jay when John mentioned “Your tree is upstairs.”  Actually, it’s Judith’s tree – sort of.  Well, that’s as far back as I know.  The tree is a fichus and probably 30 years old.

So the way I understand it, Judith was moving to Boca and gave the tree to my friends Tom & Kevin circa 1980.  Tom and Kevin remodeled the Embassy Club place in 1994 and gave me the tree.

I had the tree for 6 years.   During its tenure, the cat took a disliking to my regular travels from Chicago to SF, and adopted it as his new litter box.  The smell was unbearable, and strong considerations were given to dumping it in Lake Michigan.

In 2000, I moved to SF and gave the tree to John and Jay (in a new pot with new soil minus the cat pee).  Either the tree missed the cat pee or John had a black thumb; the tree shed all of its leaves and was presumed dead.  It was put out in the yard.   Did I mention it was Chicago?  - BRRRRR!!

The following spring, it came back to life, and John & Jay’s landlord - Dickie - claimed it for his own.  He lives upstairs and the fichus once again had a new home. So my tree now lives with Dickie.

If that tree could talk. . .

If you use it, test it!!

Today is the 13th annual National HIV Testing Day

There are 250,000-350,000 people in the United States living with HIV who do not yet know that they are infected.  At least 40,000 people are infected with HIV in the U.S. each year. People who receive an early diagnosis of HIV have substantially better health outcomes than people who are diagnosed at late stages of HIV, including stages that meet the criteria for an AIDS diagnosis.  Those who are aware of their status are less likely to transmit the virus. Additionally, those who test negative are better able to stay negative.

AIDS Action Council commends the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) for founding and continuing to host National HIV Testing Day. Official Testing day information can be found at http://www.napwa.org/.

Testing resources can be found at http://www.hivtest.org/.

Bear Fitness....is that an oxymoron?

Buzzed Beef

I don't think so and I want to talk to you about it.  My name is Mike Burton and I am proud to say that I am a bear--a bear on a quest for fitness.  I am not a certified personal trainer.  I can't create a workout regimen for you nor can I design a diet for you to follow.  I'm not a licensed counselor.  I can't offer you any advice.  But that isn't what this is about.  So, am I qualified to discuss bear fitness with you?  In the weeks ahead, I'll let you be the judge of that.

First, a little background....who am I?  I am a 6 feet tall, 260 lb bear, who, finally at 34, has embraced myself as a bear.  I've fought with that identity for years.  My physicality as a bear began early, when I was just a teenager.  My mind wasn't so quick to accept it.  I was the hairy chunky boy while all my classmates were lean and smooth.  Can anyone identify?  It has only been in the past couple of years that my mind has caught up with my body and made peace with being a bear.  I like who I am.  I love being big and thick and solid and hairy.  Do I have perfectly rounded pecs?  No.  Do I have a flat, rippled stomach?  No.  But I am a firm believer that while my body may be far from perfect in the eyes of the general population, I can be as fit and as healthy as anyone out there.

And that is the quest I am on...to be the best bear--the best human being I can be.  I am striving to find an incredible balance between physical fitness and mental fitness.  This is what I want to share with you and talk about with you.  In the months and years ahead, I am committed to this journey.  I'm going on the ride---the lap bar is down---the thumbs-up is given.

Join me?

Until next time,

Hugs (and licks if you want 'em)

Bears on Bikes

Team Bear

We love cycling. It is a great way for bear-size folks to get some exercise and it’s easy on the joints. I have cycled the California Coast, Alaska, parts of Canada and through Europe. I wanted to share with you some tips to make your ride enjoyable.

Bicycles come in all sizes, so most riders can almost always find something that fits them. Additionally, most bike shops will assist you in finding the right size. And before you buy, always remember to take the bike for a road test to ensure you’ll be comfortable later.

Gentlemen, you'll want at least 1-2 inches of clearance between the family jewels and the bicycle's top tube, when you are straddling the bike flat-footed. You may also want to raise the handlebars, so that it is within easy reach and you don't feel hunched over. On a long ride, my neck and shoulders give out way before my legs do.

Have you been fingered lately?

A reader responds . . .

I just received my first newsletter from the group. Browsing through former newsletters, I opened the March 13, 2007, issue and was PLEASED to see that you have addressed the issue of gay/bear men getting prostate screenings. I have been having this procedure done for years.....ever since I turned about "the big 50." I must admit that I somewhat enjoyed the urologist doing the DRE (Digital Rectal Exam), not because I am into any anal activities, but rather that he is a great looking guy. Very friendly, takes his time explaining to you what is about to happen, what he has found in his exams, etc., etc. Yes, I have had a deep feeling towards him for years.

Anyway – In June ’04, I did my regular PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test AND the DRE. I was told by my doctor that the lump he has been feeling for sometime had grown in size (he talked about this with me when he first found it, and explained that we would be keeping a close eye on this just in case). And in conjunction with the PSA blood test, I found that it had increased from my last visit. He advised me to let him do a biopsy just to be sure. I consented and after some 12 tissue samples later, and the biopsy being examined by a lab that specifically takes these samples for diagnosis, I had one portion of one of the samples that was positive for cancer. He explained that this cancer was a common one in men that many men never know they have it, and they live long healthy lives without any problems from the cancer, and that it was not a type that metastasizes (spreads).

But years ago I had decided - from my father-in-law dying from cancer (NOT prostate) and other people I had seen go through chemotherapy and end up dying anyway - that IF "they" ever found cancer in my body, and it could be taken out, that I wanted it out. So in July ’04, I had my second major surgery, and now I am free of the cancer. I had blood drawn yesterday for PSA screening, and will be seeing my urologist in a few days to get his report. SO FAR I have been "cancer free" for almost three years.

But the after surgery adjustment has been pure hell. I have had NO problems with pain, or with incontinence, BUT - even tho' he claimed he practiced "nerve sparing" surgery, and I wholeheartedly believe him - nerves were severed and for two years I have been impotent. Quite a drastic change from being active with other men for over seven or eight years, and then the power was turned off.... I spoke with him in one of my post op office visits and almost completely broke down in tears when I told him, "I never knew it would be like this." His usually smiling face suddenly turned into what I assumed was a shocked reaction, but he said nothing. I still put all my confidence in him.

However, over the past year, I have resumed contact with other men and have found that "things are changing" but nothing that can be stated as "normal." I am able to masturbate by applying pressure around the base of my penis so it is somewhat rigid. And being uncut, I am able to create the stimulation needed to achieve orgasm/climax. However, I have to urinate and empty my bladder as much as possible, or I will ejaculate urine, and that is not a liquid I like to have splattered over my body.

But I AM CANCER FREE.  I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR.

All of this to say that I want to thank you for telling other guys that PSA's and DRE's are very, very important when a man reaches about 35-40 years. And I would encourage men of that age to get in touch with one of the prostate cancer information and support groups - USToo is the one I joined AFTER my surgery. They can help you get through all the ups and downs of the surgery and adjusting to life after that.

So keep up the reminders for the exams that will save a man’s life.

Bears - The Documentary

Castro TheatreWell, Frameline 31 has kicked into full gear. Today was our “bear” day. We started the morning off with a screening of Pooh's Heffalump Movie. And of course, we couldn’t possibly miss BEARS – The Documentary.

The SF screening of BEARS at Frameline – a veritable who’s who of the SF Ursus Brotherhood. The SF Movie Bears were there. The Bears of San Francisco were there. And, of course – Harry (Mr. Lazy Bear, himself – for you out of towners) was there. And, so were we . . .

The crowd at Frameline was mixed. “I was expecting more bears . . .,” my partner noted. Not that there was any shortage. Also, watching a documentary about IBR in SF means that many of the on-screen bears are also in the audience and they know all the back stories. So, when a local was featured on screen, the audience would react.

BEARS is a documentary directed by Marc Klasfeld that takes you into the wild world of International Mr. Bear. Testosterone and fur fly in this fascinating and heartfelt tour into the bear scene.

The movie follows a few of the contestants in the 2004 International Mr. Bear contest. We get some insights into the process, we meet the judges, but mostly we get a view into the psyches of the contestants. As Dave Hayes of The SF Movies Bears noted before the screening “I didn’t win Miss Congeniality.” And while the tiaras may have been replaced by Leather vests, these boys are in it to win.

If you like bears - the eye candy alone will keep you happy. If you like reality TV type drama – you won’t be disappointed. If you want to see a film about brotherhood and community – then BEARS is for you . . .

Pass the butt balm

Team BearTeam Bear has joined 2,300 other riders on a journey down the California coast.  The riders are expected to raise $11 million to continue the fight against AIDS and HIV.  The money goes to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center for prevention and treatment of AIDS, which afflicts an estimated 151,000 Californians.

The ride to LA is about 545 miles and includes plenty of “hills.”  Some days are tough, especially if your butt (and knees and thighs and. . .) still hurt from yesterday’s ride.  But, nothing compares to the view at Morro Bay.

We wish all the riders a safe journey.  We are proud you.  You guys (and gals) rock!!  WOOF!!
